What’s in store for the 50+ Festival 2018?

The 50+ Festival brings together the best of what Thanet has to offer. Ageless Thanet, working in partnership with a huge number of fantastic people and organisations, aims to bring you a wide range of fun and exciting activities and experiences.

There will be lots of difference activities to get involved with on the day, including Belly Dancing, Tai Chi, Japanese Drumming, Scottish Country Dancing and lots more!

Click here to take a look at this year’s programme.

Taster Sessions

Tai Chi

One of the most popular activities we have run over the last 3 years is Tai Chi. Tai Chi is a combination of relaxation and toning exercises, promoting harmony and health, balancing the mind, body and spirit. David Lloyd one of our amazing Tai Chi teachers, affectionately known to us as “Tai Chi Dave.” Dave has run many free 8 week activities for us across Thanet, and many of the people that have started with us now carry on after the free sessions, staying with Dave or joining other groups.

Social singing with Katharine & Richard, also known as “Blend.” We have worked with Katherine & Richard who are passionate about singing. You don’t need to have an amazing singing voice, you can join in and make friends and improve your wellbeing. We have worked with them a few times and we are so grateful to them as they continue with the groups we started together over 2 years ago, which have gone from strength to strength.

Belly Dancing

Belly Dancing anyone? Vanessa (pictured here) always ensures everyone has fun with her amazing social belly dancing sessions. Vanessa is also one of our Age Friendly businesses and offers a discount to her classes if you have a reward card. Why not have a go? What have you got to lose?

After its success at the last 50+ Festival, “Boccia is back!!” Boccia is an attack and defend game, with two sides competing over a set number of ends. The aim is to score as many points as possible by placing your set of coloured balls closest to the white jack ball. We are proud to say that the Boccia activity we started about 18 months ago has now grown into two groups, who play for fun and compete against other clubs, and recently attended the world championships. The groups also received some equipment via the Ageless Thanet Community Fund to further develop their group and encourage more people to play. Come and have a go, you will be hooked!

Japanese Drumming

Bill will be encouraging everyone to try out his amazing collection of Japanese drums. The energy and passion Bill exudes is something to behold. Come and get your blood pumping and your rhythm pulsing to the beat of Bill’s drums.

Back by popular demand is “Lumba” with Leon Williams. What is Lumba? Specially designed Lumba classes involve a range of different activities to help improve vital areas of your life including fitness, stamina, weight management, core stability, maintaining muscle strength, self-belief and overall ‘mind & body’ wellbeing.

Rock Choir

The Rock Choir is open to anyone who loves to sing, regardless of how much or little experience you may have. There are no auditions and there is no need to be able to read music. There is an opportunity to have a taster session with them at 2pm after their performance at 1:30pm.

Scottish Country Dancing

Come and join in with some Scottish Country Dancing! Scottish Country Dancing is a sociable dance form with roots stretching back for centuries. Participants are grouped in to sets, typically of 3, 4 or 5 couples arranged either in two lines (men facing women) or in a square, and work together to dance a sequence of formations.

Food Court

Bessie’s Tea Parlour

At Bessie’s Tea Parlour, we aim to provide a little touch of nostalgia experience food and drinks made using the very best of seasonal, Kent produce all served on authentic vintage china. Often our ingredients are from our own farm hedgerows or foraged from the bountiful coast here in Broadstairs. All our cakes and scones are baked in our retro kitchen on site and as well as serving traditional and wartime bakes we enjoy experimenting with new flavours and ingredients. We buy directly from producers and local shops where possible, including our wide range of teas that are all blended in Broadstairs.

Our Kitchen on the Isle of Thanet
Our Kitchen on the Isle of Thanet are on a mission to help families on a low income with food education and provide good, local healthy food at an affordable cost.

Sharon Goodyer will be at the 50+ Festival on the day cooking up a storm with her healthy stir fries!

Tea and Tiffin

Tea and Tiffin is a self contained Tuk Tuk that has been converted to serve barista coffee, hot drinks, cakes and treats. We use fully compostable and biodegradable cups, lids, spoons, straws and cup holders. We seek out sustainable, organic and fair trade products.
