As energy prices experience a downturn, households across the UK are advised to continue their energy-saving practices to mitigate the impact of high bills. Despite the recent decline, energy costs remain a significant expense for many families. In response to this ongoing challenge, a collaborative effort between UK Power Networks and Social Enterprise Kent is bringing vital energy-saving workshops to communities throughout Kent.
Led by Sarah Osborn, these workshops offer invaluable insights into practical energy-saving techniques, empowering participants to take control of their energy usage and reduce their bills. From simple tips like timing showers with 4-minute songs, to more comprehensive strategies, through to signposting to services such as the Green Doctors who offer free, impartial advice and practical support providing actionable advice tailored to the needs of each household they visit.
Attendees also gain access to information about available grants and resources to further support their energy-saving efforts which could support home energy improvements, for example the Home Upgrade Grant – HUG, currently available for homes without a mains gas supply or accessing the Help for Households government pages.
Sessions end with digital advice and awareness of both how to access grants and information through to safety with a focus on energy scam awareness. For the many households facing fuel poverty, struggling to afford their energy bills or are vulnerable to scammers this knowledge can be transformative, offering a path towards greater financial stability and comfort.
Feedback from participants after attending sessions have been positive such as:
“I’ve learned how to save energy and check contact details before action”
” How to save energy in an advantageous way”
“How to keep heat in my home”
“Saving money and saving the environment”
The impact of these workshops has not gone unnoticed, with national recognition from BBC News. Coverage on BBC has brought attention to the importance of energy-saving initiatives and highlighted the positive impact of the partnership between UK Power Networks and Social Enterprise Kent.

**Please note, the BBC news report has not given full details about reducing water temperature. Boiler temperature can be reduced, during our sessions we go into details about safe water temperatures with regards to legionella bacterium and keeping to 50-60 c on hot water. Having a safe and healthy home is key though our sessions, this includes managing condensation for homes that are limiting heating in the prevention of mould.
