Kent AI Best Practice Conference

To share learning from the programme and explore what responsible AI adoption looks like in practice, Social Enterprise Kent is hosting the Kent AI Best Practice Conference.

Date: Thursday 30 April 2026

The conference will bring together SMEs, VCSE organisations, AI specialists and policy experts to explore how organisations across Kent can adopt artificial intelligence confidently, safely and responsibly.

Programme Update

Cancer Smart programme recognised at Kent and Medway Healthwatch Awards

Social Enterprise Kent’s Cancer Smart programme has been recognised at the Kent and Medway Healthwatch Recognition Awards 2026, receiving the award for Excellence in Innovative Approaches to Prevention.

Hosted by Healthwatch Kent, the awards celebrate teams and partnerships making a positive difference to health and social care through collaboration, innovation and community engagement. The Cancer Smart programme was recognised for its work in encouraging early diagnosis, promoting awareness of signs and symptoms, and helping increase screening uptake in communities facing health inequalities.

Delivered in partnership with the Kent and Medway Cancer Alliance, the initiative has focused on giving people the confidence and knowledge to make informed health choices and seek support earlier.

Events and Networking

Thanet Social Enterprise Networking Event

Social Enterprise Kent is hosting the next Thanet Social Enterprise Networking session, offering a friendly and informal opportunity for local social enterprises, charities, community organisations and purpose led businesses to connect, collaborate and share ideas.

Following on from the successful Thanet Social Enterprise Boost programme, the event will provide a welcoming space to stay connected with other social entrepreneurs and community leaders, share updates and opportunities, explore collaborations and hear about support from Social Enterprise Kent including funding, programmes and upcoming initiatives.

Community Support

Wellbeing Connections is a community support service for people aged 55+ and adults with complex needs living in Thanet, Dover, and Folkestone and Hythe.

Bringing together the previous Universal Wellbeing and Connect Well services, the programme offers a joined up point of contact for residents who need support to stay independent, manage their health and wellbeing, and access the right help at the right time.

The service provides structured and personalised support for people who may be finding daily life more challenging, need ongoing guidance to manage their health and wellbeing, or may be at risk of needing more formal care without additional help.

It also connects residents with a wide range of local wellbeing activities, from walking football and tai chi to gardening groups, coffee mornings and community based social opportunities.

Volunteering continues to support community projects across Kent

Volunteers continue to play an important role in supporting Social Enterprise Kent’s work across local communities. From helping in social supermarkets to supporting food redistribution projects and community activities, volunteers contribute time, skills and energy that strengthen local programmes.

Volunteering can offer a valuable opportunity for people to gain experience, build confidence and connect with others while contributing to projects that make a difference in their communities.

At Social Enterprise Kent, volunteering opportunities are designed to be flexible and supportive, enabling people to contribute in ways that fit around their availability and interests. Many volunteers also use the experience to build practical skills or take positive steps towards employment, training or further opportunities.

Current opportunities include supporting activities in the Ashford and Ramsgate Social Supermarkets, assisting with gleaning projects that help redistribute surplus food, and providing help with administration, marketing and community activities.

Kent County Council Short Breaks Strategy 2026 to 2031

Kent County Council has launched a public consultation on its draft Short Breaks Strategy 2026 to 2031, which aims to expand opportunities, reduce waiting times and improve support for eligible disabled children, young people and their families.

Families, professionals and community partners are encouraged to contribute and help shape the future of Short Breaks across the county.

Online Safety for 7 to 11 Year Olds

Kent County Council is also offering courses to help children aged seven to eleven stay safe online and develop the knowledge and skills they need as technology changes.

The sessions help children understand how to spot risks, make safer choices and know when to ask an adult for help.

A number of free events for neurodivergent adults are taking place in Thanet this March, including a Neurodivergent Coffee Morning in Ramsgate and a Creative Connection Club workshop focused on painting with nature.

Programme Impact

UK Shared Prosperity Fund: Impact Highlights in Thanet

Recent UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) reporting highlights significant outcomes delivered in Thanet across Community and Place, Supporting Local Business, and People and Skills.

• 10,118 people reached
• 654 organisations supported
• 1,389 people trained
• 113 people supported into employment (including self-employment)
• 989 volunteering opportunities supported
• 517 events or participatory programmes delivered

What the latest Third Sector Trends report means for VCSE organisations

The third national report from Third Sector Trends 2025 has been released, offering one of the most detailed pictures available of the financial health of voluntary, community and social enterprise (VCSE) organisations across England and Wales. Based on responses from more than 8,600 organisations, the findings show a sector that remains resilient and adaptive, but still operating under real financial pressure, particularly in less affluent areas.

Grants are back at the centre of the funding mix

One of the clearest messages is the growing importance of grant funding. Since 2010, perceptions of grants as a core income source have steadily increased, while reliance on contracts and social investment has fallen. This reflects what many organisations are already experiencing: contracts often fail to cover the true cost of delivery, especially with rising wages, National Insurance contributions and recruitment challenges. As a result, some VCSE organisations are stepping away from public service contracts altogether.

The report also highlights a positive shift in grant-making practice. More organisations are receiving longer-term and core funding than before the pandemic, and funders are taking time to understand the organisations they support. While demands for “innovation” are reappearing, there is growing recognition that stability — not constant reinvention — enables community organisations to thrive.

Trading income is harder to sustain than policy rhetoric suggests

Despite continued policy enthusiasm for social enterprise and earned income, the data tells a more nuanced story. Fewer VCSE organisations now rely heavily on trading, and newer organisations are much less likely to generate most of their income this way. The report reinforces that most trading VCSEs still depend on grants, gifts and in-kind support to remain viable, trading alone rarely provides a complete solution.

Reserves are holding, but not evenly

Encouragingly, most organisations still hold reserves, and fewer are using them to cover essential costs than in 2022. However, the picture varies significantly by place. VCSEs operating in less affluent areas are more likely to draw on reserves just to stay afloat, while those in more affluent areas are better able to leave reserves untouched or invest them in development, reinforcing ongoing concerns about geographic inequality.

Guidance: using artificial intelligence in fundraising

The Fundraising Regulator has published new guidance on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in charitable fundraising. The guidance is designed to help fundraising organisations comply with the Code of Fundraising Practice when using AI tools and approaches.

National Lottery Open Week returns (7–15 March 2026)

National Lottery Open Week will run from 7–15 March 2026. National Lottery funded venues will offer free entry, discounts and special offers throughout the week, with hundreds of venues taking part across the UK.

Digital Employability Experience (DEX): showcasing Kent organisations and supporting local talent

The Digital Employability Experience (DEX) Led by Digital Kent (Kent County Council), is a free online platform designed to help Kent residents build essential digital and interpersonal skills, while giving local employers and organisations the opportunity to showcase their sector and workforce needs.

DEX features organisations from across all industries, including the charity and voluntary sectors. Participating organisations can support employability, highlight the digital capabilities valued in their field, and advertise vacancies through the platform.

• Advertise vacancies on a free online platform

The DEX team builds your page and supports set-up through a short Teams call. The platform is being used by DWP Jobcentres and the Careers and Enterprise Company in schools.

The Green School Awards celebrate and inspire positive environmental action across Kent and Medway. The Big STEM Challenge

The Big STEM Challenge invites young people to explore, investigate and create through science, technology, engineering and maths. Entries are welcome from schools and individuals — whether a project has been developed in school, at home or through a science club.

To enter, participants are asked to share:

• what they researched / investigated / experimented
• how the project was carried out
• what they learned (with optional photos or a short video)

Finalists will be invited to a science fair at Discovery Park:

• Primary: finalists showcase their projects and compete to become Primary Big STEM Champion 2026 (cash prizes available).
• Secondary and 16+: finalists present to a “Dragon’s Den” panel for the chance to become Secondary and 16+ Big STEM Challenge Champions 2026 (cash prizes available).

SE Kitchen: Making Food Go Further in Ashford and Ramsgate

SE Kitchen supports communities through its two Social Supermarket shops in Ashford and Ramsgate, helping people access affordable food and essentials while reducing food waste.

SE Kitchen is open to everyone, no sign-up and no referral required, offering a welcoming, community-focused space where households can make their money go further. Both shops offer a weekly £1 fruit and vegetable bag.

Customers can also use a free SE Kitchen loyalty card: every £1 fruit and vegetable bag earns a stamp collect five stamps and receive the sixth bag free.

You can also buy £5 vouchers for your participants (or volunteers/staff!), and eligible Kent residents can spend their Household Support Vouchers in store.

Chequer Inn Ash Society (CIAS): Treasurer Vacancy

The Chequer Inn is owned by the Chequer Inn Ash Society Ltd (a Community Benefit Society) for the benefit of the local community. CIAS is responsible for the preservation and upkeep of the listed historic building, while day-to-day operations are managed by a tenant. The Society oversees maintenance and supports the pub’s community role now and into the future.

The current Treasurer is stepping down in February 2026. The Treasurer helps manage CIAS funds, monitoring income and payments, paying bills, and reporting the Society’s financial position at monthly committee meetings. The Treasurer liaises with a professional bookkeeper and the Society’s accountant for end-of-year reporting. A handover period will be provided to support a smooth transition.

January Updates

As the new year begins, voluntary, community and social enterprise (VCSE) organisations across Kent and Medway continue to support wellbeing, develop skills and create opportunities within their communities. This January edition focuses on mental health and resilience, skills and training opportunities, sector insight, funding, employment vacancies, and a celebration of the volunteers who make such a difference across our work.

Beating Blue Monday: Supporting Wellbeing

Blue Monday, often described as one of the most challenging points of the year, falls in late January and can act as a useful reminder of the pressures many people experience at this time. For those working and volunteering in the VCSE sector, January can be particularly demanding. The festive period has passed, energy levels may be low, finances stretched, and the year ahead can feel uncertain or overwhelming.

The impact of poor mental health is not only personal. Research from Deloitte estimates that poor mental health costs UK employers around £51 billion each year, with presenteeism, stress and financial pressures among the biggest contributors. For VCSE organisations already operating under significant pressure, this reinforces an important truth: wellbeing is not a “nice to have”  it is essential to sustaining teams, services and communities.

While it is not possible to remove all the pressures people face, small, practical actions can make a meaningful difference. Encouraging movement and connection, even in simple ways, can help lift mood, reduce stress and support both physical and mental health. Regular activity strengthens the heart, muscles and bones, boosts immune systems, and can support the management of anxiety and low mood.

Healthy Eating and Everyday Activity

Building activity into daily life plays an important role in maintaining both physical and mental wellbeing. Simple, accessible opportunities for movement can help reduce stress, improve mood and support healthier routines throughout the winter months.

VCSE organisations may wish to share the following free local resources with staff, volunteers and communities:

• Everyday Active – discover accessible sports and physical activities available in your local area 

• Kent Country Parks and Medway Country Parks– enjoy a walk, run or cycle in one of Kent and Medway’s many green spaces 

• Explore Kent and Explore Medway– find walking and cycling routes to enjoy the countryside at your own pace 

As January progresses, Blue Monday can serve as a useful prompt to check in with one another, share support, and prioritise wellbeing across organisations and communities. Small actions, taken collectively, can have a lasting impact.

Boost Client Spotlight: Green Skills and Community Action

A recent piece shared by a Thanet Social Enterprise Boost client highlights inspiring work taking place across Margate and Ramsgate, showcasing how green skills, community action and local engagement can create positive change.

The work demonstrates the value of locally led initiatives that connect skills development, environmental awareness and community wellbeing, while supporting people to build confidence and contribute positively to their local areas. It provides a strong example of place-based social enterprise impact through collaboration and innovation.

Vote for SEK at the Smiley Charity Film Awards

Social Enterprise Kent (SEK) has submitted its Breast Cancer and Screening Awareness Campaign video to the Smiley Charity Film Awards, which celebrate films that raise awareness, inspire action and create positive social impact.

The film was developed as part of SEK’s Cancer Smart programme, delivered in partnership with the Kent and Medway Cancer Alliance. It focuses on increasing awareness of breast cancer and the importance of screening, using accessible, community-led messaging to support early diagnosis and reduce health inequalities.

Stronger Kent Communities Event – Making Connections Dover

SE Kitchen and the Household Support Fund

SE Kitchen continues to support households across Kent to make their money go further during the cost of living crisis. With two Social Supermarket shops, SE Kitchen offers affordable food and essential household items, helping residents stretch their budgets while supporting a local social enterprise rooted in the community.

Applications are now open for the Kent County Council (KCC) Household Support Fund, funded by the Department for Work and Pensions. Eligible households can receive a £90 supermarket food voucher or energy voucher to help with food and essential household costs.

About the Household Support Fund

You may be eligible if you:

• Are aged 16 or over
• Live in Kent (excluding Medway, Bexley or Bromley)
• Receive means-tested benefits or have a household income of £33,000 or less
• Are not eligible for free school meals

If eligible, households can receive:

• A £90 supermarket food voucher, or
• A £90 energy voucher (for named bill payers with email and smartphone access)

Vouchers are usually issued digitally, with postal options available for those without digital access. SE Kitchen staff can support customers who need help with registration or using vouchers.

Crowdfund Kent Public Health Fund

Crowdfund Kent is dedicated to giving local organisations and groups the opportunity to take forward projects and ideas to improve their local area. Eligible projects can receive up to £10,000 in pledges, covering up to 65% of your crowdfunding target. If your project is based in the Kent County Council area, this is your chance to bring your vision to life.

Please note this is a revenue fund, designed to support projects which improve the quality of life of Kent residents, particularly those most disadvantaged and cannot be used to fund capital projects. Deadline for applications: 25th February 2026. This involves having your project page created, your pitch completed and your project verified by this date, ready to start your crowdfunding.

The Radcliffe Trust

The Radcliffe Trust offers grants to registered charities, CICs and other not-for-profit organisations based in the UK. Grants are given with the aim of promoting traditional craft, heritage, and classical music in the UK by supporting people to access training, education and skill development.

The Radcliffe Trust has two grant making programmes: 1. Under their Music Scheme, The Radcliffe Trust supports projects that involve classical music performance, training, and education for children and adults with special needs, youth orchestras, and projects at secondary and higher levels. Music grants are in the region of £2,500 – £5,000.

Under their Heritage & Crafts Scheme, the Trust will support projects that involve craft and conservation projects and training, practical projects, capacity building projects, and special needs projects focusing on the benefit of skills development. Heritage and Crafts grants are generally in the region of £2,500 – £7,500.

Grants will only be given for specific project costs, but the Trust will accept ‘proportional and limited’ costs of overheads and full cost recovery to be included in budgets. Deadline for applications 31st January 2026 for consideration by the Trustees in July.

Young Cooks

Our popular Young Cooks competition invites pupils to showcase their culinary skills, creativity, and understanding of healthy, affordable eating. The initiative promotes life skills, confidence, and awareness of nutrition and sustainability through hands-on cooking challenges.

Entries are still open for the next competition cycle, with regional heats leading to the county finals in early 2026. Prizes include a share of £600 and the chance to take part in a professional cookery masterclass.

The Kent Education Awards return to honour the incredible teachers, support staff, volunteers, and school teams who make a daily difference in classrooms and communities.

Nominations are open until 31 January 2026, with categories for teachers, early-career staff, non-teaching roles, and volunteers. Schools are encouraged to take part and recognise the individuals and teams shaping the future of education in Kent.

Last year’s event at the Ashford International Hotel was a wonderful celebration of collaboration and dedication across the education sector, and this year promises to be even bigger.

As 2025 draws to a close, communities across Kent and Medway are marking the festive season with celebrations, skills development initiatives, school achievements, health programmes, and new funding opportunities. This month’s edition features award recognition for Social Enterprise Kent, festive activities at SE Kitchen, impactful updates from our Schools and Skills teams, vital winter support programmes, and employment opportunities across the VCSE sector.

SEK Wins National Award at SEUK 2025

Social Enterprise Kent (SEK) has been named “Education, Training and Jobs Social Enterprise of the Year” at the 2025 Social Enterprise UK (SEUK) Awards, recognising the organisation’s sustained impact across Kent and Medway through education, training, employability and community-led support.

The national award celebrates SEK’s work in supporting people furthest from the labour market, delivering high-quality accredited training, and strengthening the voluntary and community sector through partnership working and innovation. Presented at a ceremony held at London’s South Bank Centre, the awards brought together social enterprises from across the UK delivering positive social and environmental change.

Looking ahead, as SEK marks its 40th year in 2025, the organisation continues to build on this momentum through the expansion of employability programmes, digital and AI skills training, and initiatives such as the Social Impact Gateway, which connects VCSE organisations with meaningful partnership and funding opportunities.

Reflecting on the recognition, Chief Executive Rebecca Smith said the award belongs to the communities SEK works alongside every day, as well as the partners, volunteers and staff whose commitment continues to create lasting impact.

Sector News

State of Social Enterprise 2025 Report Published

Social Enterprise UK has released the latest State of Social Enterprise report, surveying nearly 2,000 social enterprises to present the clearest national picture of sector performance and impact.

Despite challenging economic conditions, 48% of social enterprises reported turnover growth over the past year – 12% higher than other businesses, although lower than 2023 levels. Profitability fell, with 40% reporting a profit and 54% expressing concerns about cash flow.

Nevertheless, social enterprises remain optimistic:

• 69% are developing new products or services

• 68% are pursuing new public or private sector partnerships

• Supporting vulnerable people and improving mental health and wellbeing remain top priorities

Barriers to growth persist, particularly around access to finance, tax pressures and rising operating costs. Policymakers continue to rely on the report’s findings, which have shaped reforms such as the Social Value Act and contributed to international research through the World Economic Forum and British Council.

Festive Highlights 

Community at the Heart of the High Street

Social Enterprise Kent and SE Kitchen were delighted to take part in the Margate Christmas Lights Switch-On, a vibrant community celebration that highlighted the importance of Social Enterprise Kent’s presence right on the high street. The event was a fantastic opportunity to connect with residents, celebrate the festive season, and showcase the range of support SEK offers locally.

The day was made possible by the dedication of the wider SEK team, who brought warmth, creativity and practical support to the celebrations. Natasha Hart shared SE Kitchen produce and spoke with residents about eating well on a budget, while Helen Calvert ran popular children’s craft activities. Marianela Gamboa de Clayton provided energy-saving advice to help households stay warm and reduce costs this winter.

The team was pleased to welcome support from the Mayor of Margate, Katie Pope, alongside colleagues Jess Bartindale and Claire Shelton, who helped throughout the day to ensure the event ran smoothly.

SEK also welcomed visits from many local residents and from Polly Billington MP, as well as representatives from Thanet District Council and community partners including Thanet Health CIC.

A special thank you goes to Jack Packman and Karen Brinkman for organising another successful Margate event that brought the community together.

The day also celebrated local creativity, with a festive SEK window display created by Margate’s children. Families are invited to visit throughout December to see the artwork on display a source of pride for the young artists and a reminder of the strong connection between SEK and the local community.

SEK continues to offer free, impartial home energy support to adults and families through winter, delivered by DBS-checked and National Energy Action-trained advisers.

• Fuel debt and scam awareness

• Priority Services Register

• Carbon monoxide safety

Sport England’s Movement Fund remains open, offering £300–£15,000 to support physical activity projects including walking, cycling, fitness, and community sport.

Employment & Skills Programmes Transforming Lives
• Our Empowering Communities and employability programmes continue to support people furthest from the labour market with confidence-building, wellbeing support, skills development and meaningful job progression.
• The Thanet Job Club supported 106 participants this year, with 51 going into work, backed by one-to-one coaching, CV support and job brokerage.
• The Elevate Programme, delivered in partnership with Amey Ltd and the NHS, provided tailored, trauma-informed employability and career preparation for care-experienced young people.

Participants reported extraordinary progress, interview confidence rose from 17% to 90%, and clarity around career goals from 42% to 75%, demonstrating the life-changing impact of personalised, relational support.

High-Quality Accredited Training
SEK delivered 627 accredited courses to 2,714 learners, from First Aid and IOSH qualifications to digital skills and safeguarding. Our pioneering AI Skills Accelerator, offering City & Guilds assured AI Prompt Engineering and AI Governance qualifications, is helping local businesses and VCSEs prepare for the future. With a 4.9/5 Trustpilot rating and 98.5% recommendation rate, our learners consistently tell us that our training is empowering, supportive, and confidence-boosting.

Strengthening the VCSE Sector

SEK continues to build the resilience of Kent’s voluntary and community sector, delivering governance, leadership and impact training to charities and social enterprises. This work creates a stronger local economy where organisations can grow, employ local people, and reinvest in their communities.

Cost of Living Support (July 2023–March 2025)
Through our major Cost of Living project funded by the NHS and partners, we

• Supported 2,455 people
• Delivered 451 workshops
• Provided essential household appliances to help residents manage health conditions and prepare healthier meals.

Our Cost of Living Directory, an interactive map of local support services, received over 1,400 views in its first nine months.

Innovative Partnerships Creating Real Change
This year’s partnership with Sodexo delivered funded training to 55 SMEs, VCSEs and diverse-owned local businesses, almost triple the original target.
Participants gained vital skills in mental health, digital confidence, Net Zero, and modern slavery awareness. The collaboration strengthened the local social economy and resulted in over 52,000 social media impressions, new customers for SEK, and increased training reach across the county.

SEK employs over 40 staff and works with more than 120 volunteers, partnering with councils, NHS trusts, employers, and community organisations to create pathways into education, training and employment. This award recognises their commitment and care.

Social Enterprise Kent (SEK) is proud to announce that we have been selected as a finalist in the IWFM Impact Awards 2025 in the prestigious Social Value category, alongside our corporate partner, Sodexo.This recognition is a celebration of what happens when social value is done right—when a large, national organisation partners with a rooted, local social enterprise to make a measurable difference in people’s lives.

A Partnership Built on Purpose

When Sodexo set out to bid for a major government contract in Kent in 2022, they recognised that genuine local insight was essential. They turned to SEK for our in-depth community knowledge, strong VCSE networks, and long-standing commitment to inclusive, place-based change.

That initial conversation has grown into a thriving partnership—one that has supported over 100 organisations, helped launch new services like our Ashford social supermarket, and created meaningful learning and funding opportunities for charities, small businesses, and diverse-owned enterprises across Kent and North Wales.

Delivering Real Social Value

Together, SEK and Sodexo co-designed a pioneering free training programme to tackle the barriers small organisations face when trying to access supply chains, upskill staff, or meet new legal and digital requirements.

Across two years:

• Over 130 organisations have participated
• More than 200 individuals have received high-quality training
• SEK delivered sessions on topics including Mental Health for Managers, EDI, Net Zero, AI for Beginners, and BSL for Business
• 100% of respondents said they would recommend SEK Training
• Website traffic to SEK’s training pages more than doubled, reaching over 8,500 users
• The training campaign generated 52,000+ social media impressions, connecting new audiences to SEK’s wider offer

What’s more, the success of the partnership strengthened SEK’s internal capabilities, from developing a reusable impact reporting framework to expanding our social value consultancy offering.

Social Supermarkets, Mentoring & Momentum

The partnership has extended far beyond training. Through Sodexo’s Stop Hunger Foundation, SEK secured a £35,000 grant to open our Ashford SE Kitchen, now serving over 300 regular customers per week. Sodexo team members helped fit out the shop, and one of their Supply Chain Managers mentored our Ramsgate supermarket over 12 months, providing invaluable operational support. As the VCSE sector faces funding pressures and increasing demand, partnerships like this offer a blueprint for doing business differently: one built on trust, equity, and shared ambition.

What’s Next?

With more courses planned and new collaborations underway—including with Môn Communities Forward in North Wales—this model continues to grow. SEK is already applying the lessons from this programme to other partnerships, while Sodexo has shared the project internally as a best practice case study across their public sector teams

Social Enterprise Kent Opens Second Social Supermarket in Ashford

In a significant milestone for the community, Social Enterprise Kent (SEK) recently celebrated the opening of its second social supermarket  SE Kitchen  located in the heart of Ashford Town Centre at 22 Bank Street. The grand opening, which took place earlier this year, marks another step forward in SEK’s mission to make healthy, affordable food accessible to everyone.

Backed by generous support from Sodexo and the Stop Hunger Foundation, SE Kitchen is designed to support individuals and families in Ashford to access nutritious food. With the cost of living continuing to challenge many households, SE Kitchen offers a paid alternative to affordable groceries to those who need it most, without intrusive eligibility checks or complicated paperwork. The popular £1 fruit and vegetable bag remains a highlight, offering fresh, seasonal produce to all.

But SE Kitchen is much more than a supermarket. In addition to food, it offers holistic support services that tackle the broader issues surrounding food insecurity. Customers can access expert advice and assistance with budgeting, digital skills, employment support, including job searches and CV writing, as well as benefits checks, helping people build financial stability and regain independence.

As Rebecca Smith, CEO of Social Enterprise Kent, puts it:

“Our mission at SE Kitchen is simple: to make nutritious food available to everyone, especially during life’s toughest moments. We want every person who walks through our doors to feel supported, empowered, and treated with dignity.”

Environmental sustainability is also at the heart of SE Kitchen’s operations. By redistributing surplus and near sell-by-date stock that would otherwise go to waste, the supermarket plays a vital role in reducing food waste and supporting a more circular economy.

Like all of SEK’s social enterprises, SE Kitchen reinvests its profits back into the community, strengthening its positive social impact. The Ashford opening reflects SEK’s ongoing commitment to creating healthier, more resilient, and more inclusive communities across Kent.

Sport England Investment into Place Partnerships in Kent

Sport England is investing £250 million to tackle activity inequalities in 53 places across England. Thanet and Gravesham in Kent are included in the first phase, focusing on Northfleet North and Westcourt in Gravesham.

Liz Davidson, Active Partnership Director, Active Kent & Medway, said, “We are delighted to have two places included in the first phase of Sport England’s Place Partnerships programme. We look forward to developing a place-based systems approach to physical activity that reflects the unique priorities and needs of these two areas.”

Sport England research shows active lifestyles save £10.5 billion annually for the health and social care system.

Lisa Dodd-Mayne, Sport England’s Executive Director for Place, added, “We are proud to announce our partnerships with 53 new places. We will work with local partners to break down barriers to physical activity so that everyone has equal access to a more active life.”

Kent Community Foundation Welcomes New Chief Executive

Kent Community Foundation is delighted to announce the appointment of Catherine Glover as its new Chief Executive, starting in April.

With a strong background in strategic philanthropy and leadership roles at global non-profit CDP and the Eden Project, Catherine has a proven track record of securing funding to drive social and environmental change. She is passionate about supporting local communities and ensuring that giving is impactful and fulfilling.

A New Community Space at The Oval!

SEK is delighted to help spread the word about an exciting new addition to The Oval! From 2nd May 2025, a brand-new indoor café and community bookshop will be opening, providing a welcoming and accessible space for residents to gather, connect, and take part in regular events.

With covered outdoor areas and improved toilet facilities, visitors can enjoy activities in comfort—rain or shine. Plus, The Oval is now fully step-free, ensuring accessibility for all. A fantastic lineup of events is already in the works, including:
