Build the confidence and skills to move and assist people safely in care settings. This hands-on course combines essential theory with practical techniques, including safe hoist use, chair transfers, and repositioning in bed. Aimed at those new to care, returning to the sector, or without formal training in recent years, it offers plenty of opportunities to practise and reflect.

This course was formerly known as Moving and Handling and now reflects current CQC terminology around moving and assisting people in care settings.

The course can be delivered with or without hoist equipment, depending on your setting.

This full-day course is designed for care staff who are new to the sector, returning after time away, or have not received recent training in moving and assisting people. The course covers the theory behind safe manual handling and gives learners the chance to practise essential people-moving techniques in a supportive setting.

The session includes legislation, the principles of biomechanics, and how poor practice can lead to injury. Learners will be shown how to use a mobile hoist and stand aid safely, when to apply brakes, how to check slings and equipment for damage, and how to assess the environment before moving someone.

Practical activities include chair transfers, bed repositioning using slide sheets, and supported walking. Where available, learners will demonstrate their use of equipment such as mobile and standing hoists. This course can also be delivered with a focus on end-of-life care, where movement may need to be especially gentle, dignified and person-centred.

Training is adapted to reflect the needs of the setting. All techniques are aligned with Care Certificate Standard 13.1–13.6 and promote safety, comfort, and dignity.
