Attachment, Separation & Loss

Overview

This reflective course helps anyone working with children and young people to better understand how attachment, separation, and loss affect behaviour, development, and emotional wellbeing. It’s particularly relevant to those supporting fostered or adopted children, and connects theory to real-life strategies that support identity, resilience, and life story work. The course supports best practice under the Children’s Act and is valuable for care staff, educators, and youth workers.

Key Learning

  • Understand the impact of attachment and loss on children and young people
  • Explore behaviour through a trauma-informed lens
  • Use theoretical models to inform support strategies
  • Gain practical tools for life story and identity work
  • Build children’s self-esteem and emotional security

Course Content

This course explores the emotional impact of attachment, separation, and loss, particularly in the lives of fostered, adopted, or otherwise vulnerable children. You’ll explore attachment theory and trauma-informed approaches, helping you better understand the behaviours children may show and how to respond in ways that support long-term emotional development.

Through tutor input, discussion, and reflective exercises, you’ll learn how to apply theoretical models to everyday interactions and care planning. The session also introduces life story work as a practical tool to help children make sense of their experiences and strengthen their sense of identity.

Whether you work in residential care, education, youth settings, or family support, this course will help you build a more informed, empathetic, and effective approach to supporting children’s emotional needs. It aligns with the Children’s Act 1989 and 2004, promoting the child’s right to be heard, supported, and nurtured as a whole person.
