Course Content

Effective governance gives every VCSE organisation the structure and confidence to thrive. It is the system of rules, processes, and relationships that ensures decisions are made responsibly and resources are used wisely. For trustees and senior leaders, good governance is not simply a legal duty; it’s about creating the right environment for impact, sustainability, and trust.

This course explores the principles that underpin governance across the voluntary, community, and social enterprise sectors. Drawing on the Charities Act 2022, Companies Act 2006, and the Charity Governance Code, the session clarifies board responsibilities for compliance, accountability, and transparency. Learners will explore how governing documents shape decision-making and how to ensure strategic alignment with an organisation’s mission and values.

Using real examples, the course discusses how strong governance can prevent issues from escalating, protect reputation, and maintain public confidence. It also examines the board’s role in risk management, business planning, and succession planning, ensuring long-term direction and resilience.

Participants are encouraged to reflect on their own governance structures and identify areas for improvement, supported by practical tools and current best practice insights.

By the end of the session, trustees and leaders will understand how to apply good governance in everyday decisions, communicate accountability clearly, and ensure their organisation remains compliant, ethical, and impactful.

Whether you’re a new trustee or an experienced board member, this course offers valuable perspective on steering your organisation confidently toward its purpose.
