Professional Boundaries and Resilience

Professional Boundaries and Resilience

Overview

This full-day course supports care staff to understand the importance of maintaining clear professional boundaries in their relationships with service users, colleagues, and families. It also explores emotional resilience — a vital skill for those working in high-pressure, person-centred roles.

Professional boundaries are not always clearly defined in everyday practice, and it’s easy for “grey areas” to emerge. This course helps staff develop the judgement, self-awareness, and confidence needed to recognise boundary risks and maintain safe, respectful working relationships.

The session also offers time to reflect on resilience — what it means, how it can be built, and how it helps protect wellbeing in emotionally demanding roles.

Key Learning

  • Define what professional boundaries are and why they matter
  • Recognise the difference between personal and professional relationships
  • Understand how boundaries can be unintentionally crossed
  • Explore the consequences of boundary breaches for staff and service users
  • Reflect on power dynamics, trust, and emotional labour
  • Learn strategies to strengthen emotional resilience
  • Develop communication techniques to maintain clear boundaries
  • Know how to respond to concerns about boundary violations

Course Content

This practical and informative course helps care staff recognise and respond to pressure ulcer risks early. Learners will explore how pressure injuries form, the importance of repositioning, and how support techniques — including correct moving and assisting — play a vital role in protecting skin health.

The course also looks at how moisture, hygiene, nutrition, and general health all influence skin condition. By linking in high-level infection control awareness, learners are better prepared to minimise the spread of bacteria that may further compromise vulnerable skin.

Using real-world scenarios and reflective discussion, the session gives care workers the confidence to observe changes, respond appropriately, and promote safer care environments for people at risk of skin breakdown.
