Mental Health First Aid Awareness

Mental Health First Aid Awareness

Overview

Mental health affects us all, whether at work, at home or in our communities. Yet many people feel unsure how to recognise when someone may be struggling, what language to use, or how to offer support without feeling they might say the wrong thing.

This awareness-level course provides a supportive introduction to mental health, helping you build understanding, confidence and compassion. Delivered as a short, live online session, it focuses on everyday situations and practical awareness rather than clinical diagnosis. You don’t need any prior knowledge, just an interest in learning how to look after your own wellbeing and support others more confidently.

Key Learning

  • Increased understanding of mental health and wellbeing
  • Awareness of common mental health conditions, including depression
  • Understanding stress and its impact on mental health
  • Using appropriate and supportive language
  • The importance of self-care and personal wellbeing
  • Knowing when and how to seek further support

The course is open to individuals working within small and micro-businesses, VCSE organisations, sole traders and diverse-owned organisations. Eligibility criteria apply, with priority given to organisations supporting or operating within Kent (including Medway) and North Wales.

Course Content

This session is designed for people who want to feel more confident having conversations about mental health, whether with colleagues, volunteers, clients or within their own networks. Everything is explained in clear, accessible language, with an emphasis on empathy, respect and reassurance.

You’ll explore how mental health challenges can show up in everyday life and why early awareness matters. The course encourages reflection on your own wellbeing alongside understanding how to support others appropriately, without pressure to “fix” problems or take on a professional role.

Previous learners have shared that sessions like this helped them feel more comfortable talking about mental health, more aware of the impact of stress, and better able to look after themselves while being mindful of others. For many, the value came from gaining reassurance, not responsibility — knowing how to listen, respond kindly and signpost support when needed.
