Course Content

This half-day course provides learners with a practical introduction to drug and alcohol awareness and the impact substance misuse can have on individuals, families, and communities. The session explores both legal and illegal substances, helping learners understand their effects, associated risks, and the challenges people may face when experiencing substance-related difficulties.

Learners will examine the social, emotional, and environmental factors that can contribute to substance use, including trauma, mental health challenges, social isolation, and life circumstances. The course encourages a compassionate and person-centred understanding of substance misuse, recognising that each individual’s experience is unique.

The training also focuses on recognising potential signs of substance use or dependency and understanding how concerns may present within care environments. Learners will explore appropriate responses, safeguarding considerations, professional boundaries, and when concerns should be escalated or referred to specialist services.
