Learners will develop an understanding of common mental health conditions, explore the impact mental health can have on individuals, and learn how to recognise when someone may need support.

Suitable for staff in any role, volunteers, managers, and individuals wishing to improve their awareness, the course provides practical guidance on having supportive conversations and signposting people to appropriate sources of help.

Course Content

This Level 1 Award in Awareness of First Aid for Mental Health provides a nationally recognised introduction to mental health awareness and support. Over the course of 4 hours, learners will explore the basics of identifying mental health concerns, having open conversations, and understanding when and how to encourage professional support.
The Level 1 Award in Awareness of First Aid for Mental Health provides a practical introduction to mental health awareness and the role everyone can play in supporting wellbeing. Designed for learners with little or no previous knowledge, this course helps build confidence in recognising when someone may be struggling and understanding how to respond appropriately.

Learners will explore common mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression and stress-related concerns. The course explains how mental health can affect people’s thoughts, feelings and behaviour, while encouraging greater understanding and reducing stigma.

A key focus of the training is developing confidence in supportive conversations. Learners will consider how to approach someone who may be experiencing difficulties, how to listen effectively, and how to respond in a compassionate and non-judgemental way.

The course also introduces the importance of signposting and referral, helping learners understand when professional support may be needed and where individuals can access appropriate help.

Suitable for staff, volunteers, managers and community members, this course provides a strong foundation for promoting positive mental health and wellbeing in workplaces, organisations and everyday life.

Successful learners will achieve the accredited Level 1 Award in Awareness of First Aid for Mental Health through Nuco Training.
