Interacting with People with Learning Disabilities

From July 2022, all CQC-registered health and social care providers are legally required to ensure their staff receive training in how to appropriately interact with people with a learning disability and autistic people, as set out in the Health and Care Act 2022. While full details of the statutory training framework are pending, this course provides a strong foundation in understanding learning disabilities and improving communication.

This half-day course is designed to help care staff develop greater awareness, reduce unintentional barriers, and build the confidence needed to communicate meaningfully and respectfully with people who have a learning disability. It complements the Autism Awareness course and is ideal for staff working in residential, supported living, or domiciliary services.

The course explores a range of common learning disabilities, looks at communication hurdles, and introduces simple, practical strategies to promote dignity, inclusion, and understanding.

People with learning disabilities often face barriers to communication, independence, and equal access to care. This course helps care staff recognise and reduce those barriers by building awareness and offering practical, person-centred techniques for support.

Learners will begin by exploring what a learning disability is, how it differs from other conditions, and how it may affect communication, understanding, and interaction. The course also looks at prevalence data from Public Health England and highlights the importance of adapting care practices based on individual needs.

Delegates will gain insight into several named learning disabilities, their associated characteristics, and common care approaches. The course addresses both physical and emotional support, encouraging reflection on how care environments and communication styles can be adjusted to better support understanding and comfort.

Delivered in plain, accessible language, this course is ideal for anyone working in a care or support role and can contribute to a provider’s preparation for the implementation of the Health and Care Act 2022 (Mandatory Training Requirement) once finalised.
