This full-day course is designed for staff who are new to care, returning after a break, or who have not completed moving and assisting training in recent years. It focuses on essential theory and practical skills needed to move and assist individuals safely without hoist equipment.
Delegates will take part in scenario-based learning and practise safe, dignified ways of supporting people to walk, transfer, and reposition in bed. The techniques are designed to protect both the person being supported and the care worker, reducing the risk of strain or injury.
This course was formerly known as Moving and Handling and has been updated to reflect current CQC terminology around moving and assisting people.
This version is ideal for settings where hoist use is not required, or where staff need strong foundational skills before progressing to hoist-based training.

This full-day introductory course provides the essential skills and knowledge care staff need to move and assist people safely. Learners begin with theory, exploring legislation, the principles of biomechanics, and how incorrect techniques can cause harm to both staff and individuals.
The course then moves into practical skill-building. Delegates will practise a range of people-moving techniques without the use of hoist equipment, including supporting an individual to walk, safe chair transfers, and repositioning in bed. Slide sheet use is demonstrated and practised to ensure staff can safely reduce friction and protect skin integrity.
Scenario-based learning helps staff gain confidence and apply the techniques to real-world care settings. This course promotes dignity, communication, and person-centred practice throughout.
Skill development aligns with Care Certificate Standard 13.1–13.5, supporting safer care delivery and reducing the risk of injury.
